…He promises deliverance from affliction.
I’ve been reading the Psalms for my sprinting lately. I love the Psalms because it teaches me how to talk to God, reminds me who God is, and shows me what God does.
As I came across Psalm 34, I was challenged and comforted. I know that following Christ isn’t going to be easy. I know that there will be hardships and trials and sorrow. We were never promised a healthy life with great riches. In fact, we are told to die to our desires in order to be a follower of Christ.
However, David wrote comforting words even as he was facing adversaries. He captures this ‘yes-there-will-be-hardship-AND-God-does-something-about-it’ fear that many of us have when we are in the midst of sadness, burdens, helplessness.
‘The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
but the Lord delivers him out of them all.’ -Ps. 34: 17 -19
God knows that those who trust in Him will no live a life of peace and tranquility. The righteous, those who follow Him, are going to have numerous trials. That thought, that knowing…makes my heart break. She doesn’t want to have live in that promise of darkness. She wants to believe there is always something better; instead of knowing full happiness will never come this side of Heaven.
Thankfully, He gives us hope.
God doesn’t keep up dangling helplessly as we try to grip the reality of this fallen world. He swoops in and gives us a safety net for every time we fall. He promises us deliverance out of all of our afflictions. He promises to be with us, walk with us, comfort us in times of need.
And in that, my heart can sigh and rest.
