Snow falls lightly, whimsically from the dark clouds.
I watch the crystalline flakes dance down to the frozen ground,
almost rejoicing at being ejected from all they’ve known;
their home- that dark storm cloud.
How can they be so carefree, so joyful in their uncertainty?
I watch them, one by one, sparkle and create beauty
as they float down a new path,
A seemingly mysterious journey.
Do they know their fate? Do they know how black the night sky is?
They seem to disregard the uncertainty, the distance, the time it takes to fall.
The flakes, glittering under the moonlight, lived in their moment;
playing in their descent.
As I continue to watch, aware of my mesmerized state,
each flake arrives gently on its appointed snow mount.
The more fluffy flakes combine into a blanket of snow,
the more wonder encompasses my heart.
Their happiness is shown more fully,
glittering against the cold, otherwise silent night.
One flake upon another creates more beauty.
Their purpose separately cannot compare to the
twinkling terrain change brought about when they freeze together.
They know not their destiny and yet,
it is almost as if I can hear these small, seemingly insignificant flakes
sing and laugh on their way down.
