On my way to work this morning, one of the DJs on the radio was saying she wished we could each make up our own national holiday. Her option: National Broadway Musical Day where you had to sing everything you said and you would be followed by a chorus line. Although a bit eccentric, it got me thinking about what national holiday I would want. And it hit me: National Travel Day. A day where everyone has to travel somewhere whether that is locally, domestically, or internationally. Imagine how much that would broaden American’s view of their own country, let alone the world. A day where we are forced to meet strangers who look, live, talk, eat, walk, and play differently than us. A forced meeting of us and them. A day where our guard has to be lowered just a bit to ask for directions, appreciate different artwork, and try new foods. A day that will shatter preconceived notions like a bullet hitting a window.
Now, I know this will never be a national holiday. I know some people would hate it. But I think it would really do more good than harm in the long run. And since this will never be a holiday, I will take today and dream about all the places I want to see.
