I love challenges. Well, mostly I like winning challenges. My close friend Tracee has continuously challenged me since I met her over a year ago. While I may be a person who relies heavily on my logic and mind, Tracee is fully concerned with matters of the heart. I love that. I need that. She always makes me examine the state of my heart in order for me to better understand the state of my being.
Although Tracee and I may differ in our approach to self-reflection (and even, sometimes, in understanding God), we have many similarities. So, when she tells me about a lesson she is learning, I pay attention because I know I probably need to learn it as well. We both want to know truth and we both want to know God in an intimate way. Her mentor challenged her to read the gospel of Luke 10 times in a row. Luke, more than any of the other three gospels, focuses on who Jesus is as a person…as the Son of Man. While reading Luke through 10 times, Tracee is not supposed to look for golden nuggets of wisdom or camp out in one passage. She is to read it from start to finish and then back to the start again.
I decided to join her on this challenge because I can easily lose sight of who Jesus is and what is true about Him. I’m starting out the first read in The Message. I don’t have any idea what the result of this challenge will be but I know I’m reading this like I would a novel; and not how I normally would read the Bible. So, already there’s been a shift in my mentality and I’m only a few chapters in on my first go read!
If you are looking to find out who Jesus is and what is true about Him, I extend this challenge to you as well. You should be happy this challenge is only 10 read-throughs, the original challenge Tracee’s mentor gave her was to read through Luke 50 times. That’s right 5-0. Thank goodness Tracee can negotiate! If you’re joining us, let me know. I’d love to hear what you’re learning!
